I perfectly understand that there are a lot of Indie music sites and indie music blog in the web and even one simple google search will provide you with tones of sites, so the competition is really tough and all bloggers try their best to make their blogs the most interesting for you to read and enjoy. We have been running IndieSpeaker for a couple of years and all our posts are mostly about news, reviews, tips and impressions and it’s the first time we are ready to stop and tell you a couple of words about indie music history. Would you like to find more about it??? :-)

08 – Cheese People

Russian madness from Samara. Cheese People is a four-piece band that mixes together funk, disco, electronica and hip-hop and has no analogues in Russia and even in the whole world. The sound is influenced by European indie and electronica bands and the vocals are bit like Russian adaptation of j-pop vocal style. This band actually reminded me of some of my favorite Japanese female fronted bands like YMCK, Plus-Tech Squeeze Box etc.

When you’ll try to figure the formula of perfect post-rock it will be difficult. It should be melancholic but not depressive, you need to have good soundscapes, a twist of ambient and a part of neo-classic also is a must be thing. The rock part that is mostly missing in modern post-rock scene will be a good bonus, actually it is very hard to make the guitar-bass-drums combo to sound gentle and still be a bit lo-fi and garage. Vocals are really not necessary, the best solution is some backing choral style stuff, I mostly prefer instrumental post rock.

A good post-rock album is like a journey. It can vary from philosophy to feelings, from frozen mountains to sunny fields, from highway to a small path in the forest… from love to hate. From deep space to deep oceans and still it must carry something tiny that only your heart can see. This is the impossible combination of perfect post-rock made possible by the Australian band Laura in their Radio Swan Is Down album.

One of THE releases in this awesome genre.

My Own Private Alaska

My Own Private Alaska is a band representing not only independent scene but also one of the most non-commercial genres – screamo. Screamo lately is sometimes mislabeled due to the popularity of the word emo and the whole pink-black movement. In fact screamo is one of the post-hardcore genres and the main ideas are harsh vocals and beautiful emotional melodies. Mostly it sounds really lo-fi cause screamo bands are distancing themselves from the mainstream stuff. This genre has strongest scenes in Europe: Italy, Chech Republic and France.

My Own Private Alaska’s debut album of the same name is experimental screamo. These French guys replaced guitars and bass with a piano. So it is basically a combination of mathematical drums, harsh screamo vocals and beautiful piano melodies. It is really awesome. It gives you a real autumn mood like beautiful depression or a sad holiday. The music is very hard to describe, long six to eight minute songs are like beautifull pictures of snowy landscapes.

Eagles Of Death Metal

Everything about this band is a joke. The name is a joke, the music is a joke, they even look like a 80th gay image joke. But still they are cool.

ED1

The band was formed in Palm Desert as a project of Jesse “The Devil” Hughes and Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, KYUSS). Josh, who by the way is one of the key figures in Palm Desert scene and one of the main people in stoner rock revival, always said that everything in the band is made with the immense talent of Jesse, and he is only playing drums and producing the records.

ED2

They have two albums so far “Peace, Love And Death Metal” and “Death By Sexy”. The death metal actually comes from a situation when a drunk guy somewhere told Jesse that Rolling Stones are real death metal. Kind of really wasted sense of music. Their music is a mix of simple garage rock clichés and the attitude of we-will-never-play stadiums-but-still-thank-you-Donnington bands. Both of the albums have got some air play and lot of attention from advertising, ‘cause Jesse is a real genius of catchy lo-fi vintage rock-n-roll tunes.
