Mastodon is definitely one of the main and most promising bands on the modern metal scene. After their last release Crack The Skye (came out in 2009) they were named the new Metallica. So far this band has released four albums and every album is different yet it is the same band. Starting with raw Remission, to fastened up Leviathan, to more melodic and progressive Blood Mountain and finally to very melodic and progressive Crack The Skye. The last record is a huge success right now it is the second highest rated album of 2009, according to Rate Your Music website. The critical reception of the album was overwhelmingly positive, with numerous record of the year labels.
Ignite
Hardcore was fused from punk rock in late 70th and remained underground till late 90th when some bands finally gained recognition. During these years hardcore changed and you can’t even think that modern day hardcore bands like Hatebreed and Rise Against have something to do with original bands like Black Flag, but its true the genre is just very plastic and spawned lots of types of hardcore during these years. One of the latest types of hardcore is melodic hardcore, it is punk oriented, with melodic singing, radio friendly but still with strong political and social messages.
The band Ignite from California is one of the best representatives of this genre and their 2006 release Our Darkest Days is the best plate to start if you are interested in melodic hardcore. It is a pack of fast and melodic songs that still manage to put some ideas in you head. The great thing about Ignite is that the vocals are not traditional for hardcore and you can’t clearly see the influences of these guys. A great record indeed.

Alestorm
Alestorm is a band from Scotland and they play pirate metal.
Yeah sounds stupid, but when lots of metals are already invented it’s hard to think of something new, but they managed not only to think but to do it. Their debut album Captain Morgan’s Revenge was released in winter 2008 and gained lot of attention from the metal press. The band also gained a spot on the best metal festival in the world Wacken Open Air.

Skid Row s/t
Skid Row’s first record made it just to see the end of glam metal era in 1989 and was touched by that sound very much. The later works of this band showed us good heavy metal and the first one was basically metal guys playing glam and that made the album was better than the most super sweet albums of the 80th.

Motorhead – Motorizer
Motorhead are a living legend, they rose up with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and are still keeping up the struggle for rock for a new generation of fans. They influenced huge mass of bands and entire styles like heavy metal, thrash metal, speed metal, punk, hardcore and even stoner. Their style carved with 80th hits like Ace of Spades and Overkill is hard, fast and groovy, later in 90th they switched to more groove and little less speed. Their latest effort Motorizer released in 2008 is the result of these changes.
