The Gates Of Slumber

Whoa their new release – Conqueror, totally blew me away last week.

They play in the subgenre, or better to say genre of traditional doom metal. If you remember Black Sabbath, they were the inventors of traditional doom metal. It is slow and bit epic music focused on some occult and fantasy themes. And it really slays!

A lot of people discuss trends and mainstream and also the metal underground. This band proves that metal underground is not dead. It is not just alive and breathing it can even prove that they are much better than the standard cloned mtv bands. This release is based on the famous Conan series and is musically similar to this good old-school battle fantasy.

Not like new doom, traditional doom metal is a bit faster, not so depressive and as for me more interesting due to homage to real good bands like Black Sabbath and Pentagram. Yeah it will take you a while to get used to the sound, but when you’ll get used to it you will see that this is a great music for both work and relaxation. It really breathes with the spirit of old rock combining it with the good old gloomy vintage fantasy.

Rebel Meets Rebel

Actually this band reminds me of some sad events. On December 8th 2004 Dimebag Darrell, axeman of the famous metal legends Pantera was shot on stage. This recording was released by his brother Vinnie Paul, after Dime’s death. This album is his tribute, a redneck-whiskey-outlaw tribute!

Rebel Meets Rebel

The music was recorded by three members of Pantera (Dimebag Darrell, his brother Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown) and famous country outlaw singer David Alan Coe. Actually it is an unmixable mix of country and metal united by one thing – outlaw! The songs were composed and recorded in the late 90th and don’t expect them to be educating or good for kids. One of the main slogans of the album is “A man with nothing ain’t got nothing to loose”, it’s about gambling, about drinking, one night stands, Indians, highways and chix. Musically it mixes simple Dimebag-style groovy metal riffs with country elements and of course traditional country singing style. The album gives you a feeling of a Deep South cowboy saloon. So keep your confederate money.

Evile

One of the small summer 2007 sensations. I first read about them in Metal Hammer magazine. They were presented by Scott Ian (Antrax, S.O.D) as one of the modern “80th Trash Revival” bands. Well I wasn’t actually able to check the trashy 80th by myself, but I think Scott is one of the dudes that definitely have.

Evil

Evile started as a cover band playing small clubs for years. In some time they wrote few of their own pieces and decided to make an album. They send demos to Fleming Rasmussen and he agreed to produce the plate. Well I don’t think that a trash metal band would want more than the producer of the legendary “Master Of Puppets” by Metallica. Fleming himself said that Evile have this old school vibe.

Evil

Evile sound like the good old Metallica and Slayer. Nothing new, man against machine, gladiators, circle pits and hi-top basketball nikes. But they rule. They just have the sound and the spirit, that many modern mallcore bands are lacking. Little words! Lots of metal!

One of the most impressive modern guitarists.

mr1

Marc started as a guitarist for the nu-metal band Ill Nino and took part in their two most successful and breakthrough albums. After that he joined the legendary Max Cavalera (ex-Sepultura) and his band Soulfly in 2005. He participated in two of their albums so far and had a mighty influence at the sound and the complexity of Soulfly’s music. He released two solo albums so far “Colossal Myopia” in 2005 and “The Ultimate Devotion” in 2007. Now he’s also playing in Cavalera Conspiracy, a project of Max and his brother Igor, Sepulturas ex-drummer.

mr2

I’m really not a big fan of so called shredders but this guy is massive. First album (and the best album so far) shows a mix of Rizzo’s love for old school metal, jazz and flamenco. It is an incredibly fast mix of guitar shred and catchy progressive riffing and more calm flamenco songs with jazzy structures and some minor tribal influences. This is somehow different from other guitar master’s albums, the album is really catchy and most of people who heard it once will definitely listen to it again.
