Worrytrain

One of the beautiful things about the modern post-rock ambient scene is that some of the bands are very close to modern neo-classic. Like Worrytrain with its last album “Fog Dance, My Moth Kingdom”, which is a wonderful piece of depressive melancholic neo classical music with experimental electronic influences.

Lots of strings and a piano build the carcass of this album. Professionally arranged and very dramatic, it is like Clint Mancell meeting School of Emotional Engineering with a twist of Danny Elfmans vision. The sound is very cinematic and even if you have no imagination the music is building for you great pictures. The whole mood is a dystopian noir movie street with some big steampunk machinery seen between the grey rooftops.

Each song is like a part of this movie. A chase, a mystery, a murder… the sound is a reflection of a lonely soul caught in blank mechanic society. Very similar to a recent noir movie La Antena. The track For Auschwitz is I think the best part of the album. Still the whole work is a very touching piece of music especially in modern music that has mostly lost its soul somewhere between labels and contracts.

The vintage thinking is becoming more and more popular in almost every style of music. Dozens pf bands like wolfmother take the best from the good old days and just brew it with modern technologies. The product is way better than some of the experimental efforts but definitely worse than the original stuff.

Lindstorm is another guy who is missing the good old retro future times. It is an electronic project playing something that can be described as vintage space disco. The vintage synts are mixed with groovy bass lines, minimalistic drums and lots of analog sounds. Of course some of the space groove is lost in progress still Lindstorm is one of the best soundtracks if you want to get green star shaped sunglasses and go meet the space guests.

You still have some time to grab his CD till 12th of April and celebrate another space day in space disco mood!

Really can’t get enough of Japan. You can spend years on searching the Japanese music for great bands and then just stumble upon some band that can’t even be described in normal words.

pt1

Plus-Tech Squeeze Box is technically one of the j-pop types called picopop, practically it is a crazy mix of electronic, more traditional j-pop, jazz, lounge and even some indie rock. And it is hell of a positive band. My favorite album Fakebox is the mood of Tokio, Japanese school girls, crazy arcades and sushi dinners. It is a ride from busy business mornings to space exploration and retro games.

pt2

First time when I heard them it seemed to me so fast that I wasn’t able even to get the idea of this music. It is this like incredibly fast japan that is written to a CD. It’s not a music it is a neon poster of a happy life. Some people prefer alcohol, some prefer energy drinks, my recipe is at least 3 songs of Plus-Tech Squeeze Box and you will have good mood for hours!

A Russian band.

Kim and Buran

The history of this band starts in the seventies when the movie Captain Future was released for the first time. This movie inspired the Russian animators to make a rip-off called “The Mystery of The Third Planet”. The music was also stolen.

School of Emotional Engineering

School Of Emotional Engineering is a project by Australian electronic musician Ben Frost. After the release of first two ambient albums that were critically acclaimed by the press Frost focused on a bit more different sound switching from ambient to post-rock. As a result the album “School Of Emotional Engineering” was released in 2005.

Ben Frost

He is awesome at creating amazing soundscapes but this work is like watching a small slow-motion movie. The music is very gentle with mostly a piano leading the melody, sometimes supported by violin guitar, bass and drums. But mostly it is melted with Frost’s trade mark gentle electronic ambient. Two songs have vocal lines but as for me it was not necessary.

In one of the interviews Frost said that the instrumental part was recorded in few days but he spent a year with his notebook deepening the sound and giving this plate more feeling.

Well the only thing that I can say, this year was worth it!
