Nightmare Before Christmas

It is hard to imagine a better “director – composer” duo than Tim Burton and Danny Elfman. I think in future I will write about all Danny’s soundtracks. But this one is definitely the best and needs to be mentioned first.

They both say that they don’t even need to discuss the sound, Elfman always gets the vibe. Nightmare is a real rock opera, stylistically and lyrically between Halloween and Christmas and musically just genius. The movie is about magic holiday towns and the main idea is “people” from Halloween Town discovering the Christmas Town and organizing their own Christmas. So the music is an incredible mix of positive melodies and gloomy parts.

Elfman (who is from Russian descent) takes a lot of inspiration from old works of Russian classical composers. Also he is guy who totally understands the vibe of goth culture. By the way he sings one of the main roles (Jack Skellington) in this masterpiece filled with orchestral overtures, choral Halloween songs and even jazzy parts. Not forgetting the lyrics… a true masterpiece, recently re-released. So if bands like Marilyn Manson, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco cite Danny Elfman as one of their major influences you should check it out, maybe it will inspire you as well.

Stubbs The Zombie OST

I’m personally a fan of different zombie stuff. Mostly zombie sound is something like from the 50th some early rock and roll or swing or jazz. This is a soundtrack to a retro zombie game. Tunes from the 50th and modern independent bands = omg it’s a success!

The bands include: Death Cab For Cutie, The Dandy Warhols, Ben Kweller, Phantom Planet etc.

The tunes are mostly well known from movies like back to future and cry baby, you can even find “Strangers in the Night Here”. The whole idea is brilliant and the realization is also great. It’s really cool to see that game developers are interested in keeping the retro horror style and not like in making a standard game. As for the best songs from this plate I can name Earth Angel by Death Cab For Cutie, Shakin’ All Over by Rose Hill Drive and Mr. Sandman by Oranger.

The Fountain OST

The Fountain is a great movie. I can compare it to like the grads of the intellectual cinema. But for me this movie will always be the music.

The author of the soundtrack is Clint Mansell this is the guy who wrote the famous Requiem for a Dream soundtrack, everyone who hears it gets like really shocked. In this movie Clint again collaborated with Kronos Quartet and for the first time with Scottish post-rock band Mogwai.

The soundtrack is a combination of mimalistic neo-classical themes, ambient stuff and bit of a post-rock. Really it is very hard to describe this. It gives you all the thoughts presented in the movie but also brings its own ideas and atmosphere.

This is the soundtrack of sad and calm nights or maybe of cold rainy days, or sometimes you can even see the music falling like snow. In one word – spectacular.
